How to Germinate Peyote Seeds Successfully

Growing peyote (Lophophora williamsii) from seed is a slow but deeply rewarding process.
Whether you’re a botanical collector or first-time grower, proper germination technique determines the long-term health of your cactus.

🌱 Step 1 – Choose Fresh, Viable Seeds
Always start with fresh Lophophora williamsii seeds. Older or poorly stored seeds often lose viability.

Store unused seeds in a cool, dark place with low humidity until you’re ready to plant.
🌿 Step 2 – Prepare the Perfect Soil Mix
Peyote prefers a mineral-rich, fast-draining substrate.
Recommended blend:

50 % pumice or perlite

30 % sterilised cactus soil

20 % limestone grit or coarse sand

💧 Step 3 – Sow and Moisten
Evenly scatter seeds across the soil surface — do not bury them.
Mist gently with distilled or rain water until moist (but not soaked).
Cover the container with clear film or a humidity dome to retain moisture.

Ideal conditions:

Keep covered for the first 3–4 weeks and ventilate daily to avoid fungus.

🌵 Step 5 – Monitor Germination
You’ll see tiny green buttons emerge within 10–30 days.
Continue light misting until seedlings reach 5–10 mm wide, then begin gradually removing the cover to harden them.
🪴 Step 6 – Aftercare and Transplanting
Once seedlings are 3–6 months old, transplant into small pots with fresh soil.
Avoid fertiliser for the first six months and water only when the soil is completely dry.
